What is the Indiana Driver Safety Program?

The Indiana Driver Safety Program is a 4-hour course regulated by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Motorists take the course to satisfy a court requirement, satisfy a BMV notice, or get a point credit on their driver record. The BMV licenses private schools to offer the courses. Motorists register for a course through an approved school and earn a certificate of completion upon finishing the course material. The certificate of completion is submitted to the court in the event of a court requirement. The private schools are also required to electronically submit all completions to the BMV regardless of the reason a motorist takes the course. The BMV processes completions in approximately 7-10 business days.

BMV Notice

Indiana law provides that motorists convicted of two or more traffic offenses within a 12-month period may be required to complete a Driver Safety Program (DSP). Motorists typically receive a notice in the mail from the BMV. Individuals under 21 years of age are required to complete a DSP if they are convicted of two or more traffic offenses. A DSP course must be completed within 90 days of a BMV notice or driving privileges will be suspended.

Court Requirement

A court may also require an individual to complete a DSP course. This requirement is typically an alternative to suspending a motorist's driving privileges. A court is not required to offer the DSP course. It is in the court's discretion.

Point Credit

The BMV will apply a 4-point credit to an Indiana Official Driver Record for successful completion of a BMV-approved DSP. The credit may only be applied once every three years. However, if an additional course is completed, the time period of the credit will be extended for three years from the new course completion date.

More About Our Driver Safety Programs

Take one of our Indiana Driver Safety Program (DSP) courses to meet a BMV requirement, satisfy a court order, and/or get a 4-point credit on your driver's license. We offer 4 different DSP courses:

• Basic Driver Safety Program (Either Internet or Streaming Video Options Are Available)
• Teen Driver Safety Program
• Truck Driver Safety Program
• Mature Driver Safety Program

All of our DSP courses are approved by the Indiana BMV.

All of our DSP courses are four hours in length per Indiana's requirements, and consist of short lessons with written material, animations, games, and a short quiz after each lesson (please note, the Basic DSP Video course consists of videos rather than written material, animations and games). You must pass the lesson quiz to proceed to the next lesson. Most people pass the lesson quiz on their first attempt. However, you are allowed unlimited retakes on the lesson quizzes at no additional charge, so you can retake them until you pass!

The final exam is online. It consists of 10 questions, and you must score at least 80% to pass. Most people pass the exam the first time. However, you can take the exam as many times as necessary to pass without any additional charge.

Once you have passed the course, you will be awarded a Certificate of Completion online. This certificate can be accessed in your student account. We recommend that you print a copy of your certificate for your records. We notify the BMV within 24 hours if you complete the course Monday through Thursday. We notify the BMV the next business day (usually Monday) if you complete the course Friday through Sunday. We suggest that you check with the BMV within 7-10 business days after you complete your course to make sure everything has been processed on their end. It can take up to 10 business days for the BMV to process your completion, so please plan accordingly to meet your deadline. Your license may be suspended if you do not complete your course on time.

BMV-Approved Programs

The BMV has approved a variety of formats: classroom, DVD or online format. All approved schools must adhere to the same curriculum standards, and all courses are a minimum of four hours in duration. The DSP courses do not teach an individual how to drive, but rather the courses provide information that will help improve defensive driving skills. The maximum cost for any of the BMV-approved DSP courses is $55. All drivers taking a DSP must pay any fees associated with the course. Allow 7 to 10 business days for completion results to be processed.

What is the difference between the Driver Safety Program and Driver Education?

The Indiana Driver Safety Program is for Indiana drivers with an existing license who seek to remedy a government requirement or wish to improve a driver record. Driver education is for Indiana residents who seek to meet the qualifications for obtaining a driver license. The two courses cannot be used interchangeably. An existing Indiana driver must take a driver safety program, and an aspiring driver must take driver education.
