What is the Oklahoma Parent-Taught Driver Education Course?

Oklahoma Parent-Taught Driver Education is a driver education course geared towards parents who want to teach their teens to drive. Completion of the course qualifies a teen to take the driving skills test and obtain a license. The course is regulated by Service Oklahoma. Service Oklahoma licenses private schools to offer the program to parents. Parents or their teens register with a school to take the course.

The course consists of 30 hours of instruction and 55 hours of behind-the-wheel practice. Schools provide the curriculum and a behind-the-wheel teaching guide. Parents monitor their teen's progress through the instruction and follow the guide to provide behind-the-wheel practice.

The course is divided into two components:

30 Hours of Instruction (Theory);
55 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Training (Practice)

Eligibility Requirements for Parents

There are a few eligibility requirements you must meet in order to become your teen's instructor for the Oklahoma Parent-Taught Driver Education course.

A "parent" is defined as the biological parent, adoptive parent, parent by marriage, or legal guardian (court appointed) of the student. To be eligible to be the “parent instructor,” a parent must meet the following requirements:

Must have a valid driver license which is in the parent instructor’s possession at all times while performing behind-the-wheel instruction
Must not have had his or her driving privileges or driver license suspended, canceled, revoked or denied within the past 12 months
Must not have been convicted of possession or use of alcohol or drugs within the past 12 months
Must not have more than 5-point violations on his or her driving record
Must have no administrative action by Service Oklahoma pending pursuant to 47 O.S. 753, 754, or 754.1 relating to driving under the influence or pursuant to 47 O.S. 761 related to driving while impaired

Getting Started

It takes just two easy steps to get started:

Fill out the Parent-Taught Driver Education Affidavit Application. Upon approval, your approval number will be sent to you via email.
Once Service Oklahoma has approved your online affidavit application and issued you an approval number, you can register your teen on our website and make payment for the course.

Course Procedures

After you have registered for the course and made payment, your teen may apply for his or her Learner Permit at a Driver License Exam site if your teen is at least 15 years old. You will need to bring your receipt of payment and your affidavit approval number as proof that your teen is enrolled in an approved driver education course. Check our Learner License Requirements page to make sure you have all of the required documents necessary for your teen to apply for his or her Learner Permit. Your teen will have to pass a vision test and a written driving exam to get his or her Learner Permit.

Note: Your teen has the option of completing the 30 hours of online classroom instruction before applying for his or her Learner Permit, but this is not required. Only proof of enrollment in an approved driver education course is required to get your Learner Permit if your teen is between the ages of 15 and 16.
The advantage of completing the classroom portion of a driver education course before applying for the Learner Permit is that the course will help better prepare your teen for the written exam he or she must pass to get his or her Learner Permit. Please note that we do not issue a Certificate of Completion for the course until both the classroom portion and behind-the-wheel training portion are complete, and teens must have their Learner Permit before starting the behind-the-wheel training.

Complete the entire driver education course, which consists of 30 hours of online classroom instruction and 55 hours of behind-the-wheel practice (including 10 hours of driving at night). After your teen has completed both the online classroom instruction and the behind-the-wheel practice, your teen must pass a final exam. Once your teen successfully completes the final exam, we will issue your teen a Certificate of Completion.
When your teen is ready to apply for his or her intermediate driver license, bring his or her Certificate of Completion and other required paperwork to the Driver License Exam site. Starting November 1, 2023, teens are required to complete the free Oklahoma Work Zone Safe course prior to applying for their intermediate license. What is the Oklahoma Parent-Taught Driver Education Program?

The Parent-Taught Driver Education (PTDE) Program allows a parent or legal guardian to teach their teen a driver education course. It also allows teens to earn their learner permit and qualify for a driver license. PTDE requires both online classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel driver training.

How does it work?

The teen's parent or legal guardian must first fill out the Parent-Taught Driver Education Affidavit Application online. Once Service Oklahoma has approved your affidavit, you will be emailed an approval number, which you will need before starting the PTDE course.
Register and pay for the course. We will issue you a receipt for payment.
At this point, if you are at least 15 years old, you may apply for your Learner Permit at a Driver License Exam site. You will need to bring your receipt of payment and your affidavit approval number as proof that you are enrolled in an approved driver education course. What are the requirements to get an Oklahoma Learner Permit?

Oklahoma Teens between the ages of 15 and 16 must be currently enrolled in an approved driver education course to qualify for a Learner Permit. To satisfy the proof of enrollment requirement, teens can register for our online driver education course and make payment. Once payment is made, we will email the student a receipt. Teens must bring this receipt with them to the Driver License Exam site when applying for a Learner Permit.

The Driver License Examiner will process their application and administer a written exam and a vision exam. If they pass both exams, the examiner will issue them a form that they must take to the tag agency and pay a fee for their Learner Permit.

Note: You have 2 weeks after passing your written exam to take your form to the tag office. After that, you will be required to re-apply and re-test.

Teens between the ages of 15 and 16 must bring the following with them when applying for a Learner Permit:

One primary proof of ID - a complete list of acceptable documents can be found here
Social Security Number
Their parent or legal guardian.
Documentation showing that they are enrolled in a driver education course (i.e. affidavit approval number and receipt of payment for the course)
Any documents showing a legal name change if they’ve had a legal name change. These documents should connect all of the last names from the birth certificate to the current last name. They can read more about this here.

Students have the option of waiting until they complete the classroom portion of driver education to apply for their Learner Permit, but again, this is not a requirement. Students must only show proof of enrollment in a driver education course to qualify for their Learner Permit.

However, the advantage of completing the classroom portion of a driver education course before applying for the Learner Permit is that the course will help better prepare the student for the written exam they must pass to get their Learner Permit.

After receiving your Learner Permit, you may begin your behind-the-wheel training.

What are the requirements to get an Oklahoma Driver License?

To qualify for an intermediate license after completing our driver education course, teens must do the following:

Have proof of completion of the driver education course, including the 55 hours of behind-the-wheel training
Starting November 1, 2023, have proof of completion of the Oklahoma Work Zone Safe course
Have a Learner Permit for at least 6 months
Have no traffic convictions on their driving record
Pass the driving skills exam

Teens under the age of 18 who have completed our driver education course should bring the following with them to the Driver License Office when applying for their intermediate driver license:

Note: At least one instructor must be present when the teen applies for a driver license at the Driver License Office.

As previously stated, teens must pass the driving skills test before being issued an intermediate license.

With an intermediate license, teens can drive from 5 am to 10 pm without being accompanied by a licensed driver. Teens can also drive outside the hours of 5 am to 10 pm if they are driving to or from school, church, or work-related activities OR if they are accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old.

With an intermediate license, teens are only allowed to drive with one passenger, unless they are accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old or unless the other passengers are people who live in the driver's home.

To get an unrestricted license that allows you to drive at any time and without passenger restrictions, you must meet the following requirements:

Have an Intermediate License for at least 6 months
Have no traffic convictions on your driving record

Be at least 18 years old
Have passed all driving and vision exams

What is included in the curriculum?

The curriculum consists of engaging lessons with:

Lecture material
Informative videos
Interactive animations and slideshows
Fun games

A short quiz will be given at the end of each lesson. You must answer at least three of the four questions correctly to move on to the next lesson.

Practice exams are provided to help you review for your written driving exam.

These features will allow you to easily master the content and help you pass with flying colors! We want to make this process as easy and anxiety-free as possible.

What happens if I do not pass the lesson quiz?

Most people pass each quiz the first time. However, if you fail a lesson quiz, you will have to retake it as many times as necessary until you achieve a 75% or better (3 out of 4 questions correct) before moving on to the next lesson.

How long does the Oklahoma Parent-Taught Driver Education Online program take to complete?

The entire program requires a minimum of 85 hours to complete. It consists of:

30 hours of online instruction
55 hours of behind-the-wheel practice (in which 10 hours must be completed at night)

What is the Oklahoma Work Zone Safe course?

The Oklahoma Work Zone Safe course is a free online course offered by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. The course takes about 45-60 minutes to complete and covers how to navigate work zones safely. Starting November 1, 2023, all teens are required to complete the Oklahoma Work Zone Safe course and present their Certificate of Completion when applying for their intermediate license.
