Questions

What is the Florida Intermediate Driver Improvement (IDI) course? Why do I need to take it?

The Florida Intermediate Driver Improvement (IDI) course is an 8-hour course focused on changing aspects of a driver's attitude and behavior that have led to unsafe choices behind the wheel, traffic citations and collisions. You may need to take an IDI course if you have received 2 tickets in a 12-month period and have gotten your court's permission to take an IDI course to keep points from going on your driving record. You may also need to take this course if you have been ordered by a judge or your court to take an 8-hour IDI course, 8-hour traffic school, 8-hour driver improvement, an intermediate defensive driving course (DDC), or 8-hour defensive driving school (DDS). These are all different names for the same course.

What is the difference between the Basic Driver Improvement (BDI), Intermediate Driver Improvement (IDI) and Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) courses? How do I know which one I should take?

BDI, IDI and ADI are all driver improvement courses. They are different lengths and are taken for different reasons.

The Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course is a 4-hour course that you can take to get your ticket dismissed, keep points off your driving record, receive a 9% fine reduction, and/or prevent your insurance rate from increasing. You can only elect to take a BDI course 8 times during your lifetime, and you cannot take this course if you have already elected to take a BDI course within the past 12 months or if you were driving a commercial vehicle. You can read more about the reasons why drivers take our Florida Basic Driver Improvement course here.

The Intermediate Driver Improvement (IDI) course is an 8-hour course most commonly taken by drivers who have received 2 tickets in the past 12 months and who have received permission from their court to take an 8-hour course to avoid points on their license, or who have received a court order to take an 8-hour traffic school course.

Please Note:The Florida Aggressive Driving course is an 8-hour course that is typically ordered by a judge for drivers with multiple traffic offenses where the driver shows signs of aggressive driving behavior, such as high-speed tickets, drag racing, etc. The Intermediate Driver Improvement course is NOT the same as the Aggressive Driving course.

The Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) course is a 12-hour course drivers take to get their driver license reinstated following a suspension or revocation, to meet a state requirement after being categorized as a Habitual Traffic Offender, to fulfill a court order, to fulfill a requirement for the "3 Crashes in 3 Years" law, or to fulfill a department required notice for an ADI due to an out-of-state ticket.

What is the difference between the Intermediate Driver Improvement course, the 8-hour Driver Improvement course, Intermediate Defensive Driving Course (DDC), 8-hour Defensive Driving School (DDS) and 8-hour Traffic School?

These are all different names for the same course. Courts may refer to this course by different names, but they are all one and the same.

Is this the same thing as the Aggressive Driving course?

No, this is not the Aggressive Driving course. The Aggressive Driving course is typically ordered by a judge for drivers with multiple traffic offenses where the driver shows signs of aggressive driving behavior, such as high-speed tickets, drag racing, etc.
