Take our course if you are an adult age 18, 19 or 20 and must complete an Adult Driver Education course to satisfy a licensing requirement. You can also take our
course if you are over age 18 and want to prepare for the knowledge exam or just to brush up on your knowledge of Illinois traffic laws.
How the Illinois Adult Driver Education Course Works
Step 1: Register
Registration is quick and easy! Create a username and
password, and fill out your contact information. You must be at least
age 17 years and 3 months to register for the course, but you cannot get your license until you are at least age 18.
Step 2: Pay
Pay for the course online with a credit card. You can also send us a check by mail
or call us to make a payment with a credit card over the phone.
Step 3: Complete the Course
The Illinois Adult Driver Education course consists of lessons made up of reading material, videos, animations, interactive exercises,
and games. You'll review Illinois traffic laws and defensive driving techniques. We also present methods for increasing your awareness
of other road users such as pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists.
The course is 6 hours long in accordance with the Secretary of State's (SOS) requirements. You can finish it in one sitting or in bits and pieces. The SOS
requires that you finish within 30 days of registering.
A short multiple-choice quiz is given after each lesson. Each quiz consists of three multiple-choice questions. You must answer two
questions correctly to proceed to the next lesson. Most people pass the lesson quizzes
on their first attempt. But don't worry--you can review the lessons and retake the lesson quizzes as many times as you need to pass at no additional cost.
Step 4: Pass the Final Exam
You will take an online multiple-choice final exam after finishing all the course lessons. The exam consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you
must score at least 75% to pass. No need to worry! Most people pass the first time. Per the SOS's requirements, you are permitted two tries to pass the final exam. After
that, you must start the course over. Safe2Drive does not charge any additional fees to retake the final exam or start the course over.
Step 5: Get Your Certificate of Completion
We process your completion to the Illinois SOS within two business days. You will then receive an email from the Secretary of State at the email address you provided when you registered with
Safe2Drive. The email will include an attachment with your Certificate of Completion. You must print the certificate and take it to the nearest Secretary of
State facility with your other required identification documents and complete the remaining
requirements to receive a driver’s license.
If you are 21 or older, your completion will not be processed to the Secretary of State. Safe2Drive will provide you with a Receipt of Completion via email once you have passed the course. You can also print a copy online from your account.
