I have a confession to make: I failed my first attempt at the maneuverability portion of my Ohio driving test when I was sixteen. I’m not the only one: about 1 in 5 first-time applicants failed the Ohio road exam in 2018. I was able to take the test again a few days later, and after some more practice and reviewing my notes from my Ohio Driver Education course, I passed with flying colors. That was fifteen years ago, and I’m happy to report that I haven’t harmed a traffic cone since! While Ohio teens under age 18 may retake the driving test two days after failing their first attempt, things work differently for those age 18 and older.
Because Ohio only requires drivers under age 18 to complete a driver education course before applying for their license, many people over age 18 choose to simply study the driving manual and skip taking a formal driver education course. It’s not so surprising, then, to learn that according to a study conducted by the Ohio Department of Public Safety in 2018, drivers age 18 to 24 were more likely to fail their driving test than drivers in other age groups. So what happens when a driver age 18 or older fails their driving test in Ohio?
Drivers age 18 and older who fail their first attempt at the maneuverability or the road portion of the driving test are required to complete an Ohio Abbreviated Adult Driver Training course. This is a relatively new requirement--it’s only been a law since 2017. Confused about how OH Abbreviated Adult Driving Training courses work? We’re here to help by answering some common questions about the course!
What is the difference between the Ohio Driver Education course and the Ohio Abbreviated Adult Training course?
This is a great question! Drivers under age 18 are required to complete a 24-hour Ohio Driver Education course in order to qualify for an Ohio driver license. They’re also required to complete eight hours of driving instruction with a professional driving school.
Drivers age 18 and older who fail their first attempt at the maneuverability or road test are required to complete a 4-hour Ohio Abbreviated Adult Driver Training course. As the name suggests, it’s an abbreviated or condensed version of the 24-hour course designed specifically for adult drivers.
