It’s a new year--leave your old driving habits in 2023! As we drive into 2024, here are some tips for starting the year off on the right foot when you’re behind the wheel.

Plan ahead!

One of the best habits to adopt this year is to plan ahead! Ways to plan ahead include:

  1. Designate a driver: If you plan on drinking, choose a designated driver who will stay sober throughout the night. Another great option is to order a rideshare service at the end of the night.
  2. Map out your route: Take some time to map out your route in advance. This will help you avoid unfamiliar roads and potential traffic jams, making it easier to get where you need to go in plenty of time.
  3. Share the driving responsibilities: If you’re going on a long trip with other drivers in the vehicle, prepare to switch out the driver every 4-6 hours. This will help make sure the driver is always alert and well-rested.

Stay alert!

Speaking of sharing the driving responsibilities, here are a few more ways to make sure the driver is always alert!

  1. Get plenty sleep: Make sure you’re well-rested before getting behind the wheel.
  2. Put your phone away: Avoid using your phone while behind the wheel, even for hands-free calls or texts. Some states prohibit phone use at all while driving.
  3. Drive defensively: Pay attention to the road, other drivers, and pedestrians. Stay aware of your surroundings and be ready to avoid hazards that may come up.

Here are some ways to avoid to distracted driving:

  1. Program the GPS before you leave, and put your phone on "Do Not Disturb While Driving" mode if you can. This will silence notifications and can even send automatic replies to anyone who tries to contact you while you’re driving.
  2. Pull off the road in a safe place if you need to do anything that will take your attention off the driving task.
  3. Don’t look at passengers when you talk to them or talk with your hands. When you need to check the time, your speed, etc., give it a quick glance, then look at the road again.

This year, make a resolution to celebrate the New Year safely. By following these tips, you can help ensure that you and your loved ones have a happy and healthy start to 2024!
