How to Change Your Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are one of those things people sometimes forget to keep an eye on. Depending on where you live, you might not use them very often. Even so, it's important to keep your windshield wipers in good condition so you're ready for anything.

What size windshield wipers do I need?

The windshield wipers you need will depend on the make and model of your vehicle. Check your owner's manual to find the type of windshield wipers you need. You can often find a book at the auto parts store with this information as well.

Never use windshield wipers that are too short or too long for your vehicle. If your windshield wipers don't fit properly, they will not work properly, which could put you in a dangerous situation when it rains or snows.

Remember to turn on your headlights when your windshield wipers are activated, even during daytime hours. This is required in many states and is a good practice to keep. It will help other vehicles see you better when it's raining.

Changing your windshield wipers for the first time can be intimidating, but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze! You'll be able to change your windshield wiper rubber blades on your own. If you have an issue with your lower wiper arm, you'll probably need to take it in to a mechanic.

The first step is to find the correct windshield wiper blades for your vehicle, as we discussed above. There are many different brands and price points for windshield wiper blades. Choose which ones are recommended for your vehicle or your favorite brand. Just make sure they're the correct size!

Next, pull up the wiper arm so you can access the windshield wiper blade. You'll want the blade to be perpendicular with your windshield.

Windshield wiper blades usually clip right into the wiper arm. Look for the small hook that attaches the blade to the arm. Press down on the stopper and unhook the blade from the wiper arm. You can throw away the old wiper blade. Some people hold onto these and use them for cleaning glass around the house.

Once the old windshield wiper blade has been removed, you can attach the new one! Make sure you're putting the longer wiper blade on the longer wiper arm and vice versa. Slide the new windshield wiper blade into place until you hear a snapping sound. Turn the wiper blade so it is parallel with the wiper arm, then gently place it back on the windshield.

Repeat this process with your other windshield wiper, and you're all set! Make sure to check that they're working properly before you hit the road. You can test your windshield wipers by dispensing your windshield wiper fluid and using your wipers to clean the windshield.

If there are any issues with your windshield wiper blades, double-check to make sure you snapped them into place properly and that you chose the correct size for your blades.
