How Does Online Driver Education Course Work in Richland County?

If you are under the age of 18 in the state of Ohio and want to get your driver license, you must complete a driver education requirement. Driver education in Ohio consists of two components:

  • 24 hours of classroom instruction
  • 8 hours of driving instruction with a professional driving school

Safe2Drive's online Ohio Driver Education course will satisfy the 24 hours of classroom instruction component of driver education.

Here's how our course works:

1. Register. If you are at least 15 years and 5 months old, you can sign up for our course. Registration is easy--simply create a username and password and read some information about the course. You will need to have a parent present when you register online. Your parent will be required to read and sign the Training Agreement, which outlines our course policies, and we will need to verify your parent's identity before you may begin the course. We are required by the state of Ohio to verify your parent or guardian's identity before you can begin the course. We verify your parent's identity through EVS if we are able to pull questions for them. If we are unable to verify your parent or guardian's identity via EVS, they can submit a notarized affidavit.

2. Complete the 24 hours of online coursework. Enjoy short lessons full of games, animations, videos and other interactive multimedia elements. Each lesson is followed by a short quiz. You must pass the lesson quiz to move on to the next lesson. Most people pass the lesson quiz on their first attempt, but we provide unlimited retakes of lesson quizzes at no additional cost. Review the lesson material and retake the quizzes until you pass!

4. Pass the final exam. At the end of the course, you must pass a 50-question, multiple-choice final exam. A passing score is 75%. According to Ohio rules, you are only allowed 3 attempts at the final exam. If you fail the exam a third time, you must start the course over from the beginning.

5. Receive your Certificate of Completion. When you pass the final exam, we will email you your Certificate of Completion. This is your proof that you have completed the 24-hours of coursework portion of your driver education requirement. Present this certificate to the school you’re taking the behind-the-wheel instruction with. When you complete your 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, the behind-the-wheel school should issue you a completed Driver Education certificate that indicates you have completed both the 24 hours of coursework and the behind-the-wheel instruction portions of Driver Education. You will bring that certificate with you when you go to take your driving skills exam at the BMV (Richland County locations).

How to Get Your Probationary Driver License (Under 18) in Ohio

Ohio follows a Graduated Driver Licensing program, meaning that there are different stages of licenses. Each stage leading up to a full driver license has certain restrictions (for example, what time of day you can drive and whether you must be accompanied by a licensed driver), and there are certain requirements you must meet to qualify for each stage of licensure (for example, you may have to meet an age requirement or pass a certain test). The purpose of Ohio's Graduated Driver License program is to keep everyone on the road safe. New drivers, especially teen drivers, are at a higher risk of being involved in a collision than older, more experienced drivers. The Graduated Driver Licensing program allows young drivers to gain experience gradually over time with certain safeguards (a.k.a. restrictions) in place to help reduce their risk. Below is an overview of that process for those under age 18.

Step One: Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC)

The first step towards getting your driver license is the Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). To qualify for a TIPIC you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old.
  • You must pass a vision screening.
  • You must pass a knowledge test.
  • You must submit an application for a TIPIC at a driver exam station.
  • You must provide documentary proof of your full legal name, your date of birth, your Social Security Number, and your citizenship or legal presence. You can find out more about acceptable identification documents here. If you are under 18, the application must be co-signed by a parent or legal guardian when you submit the application and the co-signer must present either a valid Ohio driver license or a valid Ohio ID.

When you obtain your TIPIC, there are certain restrictions you must follow while driving:

  • If you are under 16, you must have a licensed parent or legal guardian occupying the seat next to you.
  • If you are 16 or older, you must have a licensed driver age 21 or older occupying the seat next to you.

Your TIPIC will expire one year from the date that it is issued.

Step Two: Driver License

To apply for your driver license, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must hold your TIPIC for at least six months.
  • You must provide a Certificate of Completion to verify you have completed the entire driver education requirement (24 hours of coursework PLUS 8 hours of behind-the-wheel). Safe2Drive's course satisfies the 24 hours of required classroom instruction. You will also need to complete the required 8 hours of driving instruction with a professional behind-the-wheel driving school. You can find a list of approved driving schools on the Ohio DPS Driver Training website. When you complete Safe2Drive's 24-hour course, we will send you a Certificate of Completion. Present that certificate to your behind-the-wheel school so they know you've completed the classroom portion. Then, once you complete the 8 hours of behind-the-wheel with them, they should give you a Certificate of Completion that shows you have completed BOTH the 24 hours of coursework and the 8 hours of behind-the-wheel. Take this certificate with you when you go to take your drive exam (Richland County locations).
  • You must complete 50 hours of practice driving with a parent or guardian, with at least 10 hours of night driving. These 50 hours of practice driving must be verified with a notarized affidavit signed by your parent or guardian.
  • You must pass a driving skills test.
  • You must submit an application for a driver license at a driver exam station.

When you obtain your driver license, you will face certain restrictions.

During the First 12 Months of Holding a License

  • You may not operate a vehicle from midnight until 6 a.m. unless:
    • You are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
    • You are driving to or from work with documentation from your employer.
    • You are driving to or from an official school-sponsored event or religious event with appropriate documentation from the event official.
  • You may not operate a vehicle with more than one non-family member as a passenger unless you are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • You (the driver) and all passengers must wear safety belts.
  • You (the driver) may not use any mobile devices, including phones.

If you are convicted of a traffic offense within the first six months of having your license, you may be required to be accompanied by your parent or guardian for six months or until you reach age 17.

After the First 12 Months of Holding a License and Under Age 18

  • You may not operate a vehicle from 1 - 5 a.m. unless:
    • You are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
    • You are driving to or from work with documentation from your employer.
    • You are driving to or from an official school-sponsored event or a religious event with appropriate documentation from the event official.
  • You (the driver) and all passengers must wear safety belts.
  • You (the driver) may not use any mobile devices, including phones.

If you receive multiple traffic convictions before your 18th birthday, you may have your license suspended. For alcohol-related convictions, your driver license will be suspended for at least six months.
