Court-ordered Driver Improvement
Courts in Virginia may direct a motorist to attend a driver improvement clinic if they are found guilty of a traffic offense. Attendance at a clinic may be in addition to other penalties.
In many cases, the judge may allow attendance at an approved driver improvement clinic in exchange for keeping points from being added to the driver's record. Alternatively, the judge may grant a
reduction in fines in exchange for attendance at a clinic. In rare circumstances the judge may dismiss the case. The motorist may attend any driver improvement clinic approved by the DMV.
It is at the court's discretion whether you will be awarded safe driving points for taking a court-ordered driver improvement clinic. Your notice from the court should tell you whether you will be awarded
safe driving points or not. If the court states you will be awarded safe driving points, please choose the "Court Ordered-With Safe Driver Points Awarded" option when registering. If the court states
you will not be awarded safe driving points, please choose the "Court Ordered-Without Safe Driver Points Awarded" option when registering.
