What is a VOE?

VOE

VOE stands for "Verification of Enrollment." It’s a form that verifies that you are enrolled in a school and are in good standing with that school (meaning, you’re attending regularly and you’re receiving credit for the classes that you’re taking there). In some states, it’s known by other names, such as "Certificate of School Enrollment" or "Certification of Attendance." If you’re under 18, many states require you to submit a VOE or Certificate of School Enrollment to qualify for your permit or driver’s license.

Below, we’ll answer the most frequently asked questions regarding VOE’s.

Where can I get a VOE form?

You can ask your school’s main office for a VOE. It’s very common for students to ask for a VOE, so don’t worry, they’ll know what you’re talking about.

In many states, you can also find the Verification of Enrollment form online.

If you’re in Texas, click here for your VOE.

If you’re in Georgia, you can download a copy of your Certificate of School Enrollment here.

If you’re in Nevada, you can download your Certification of Attendance here.

In Oklahoma, you’ll need to get proof of current enrollment on a form provided by your school as well as documentation from your school showing that you have successfully passed the criterion-referenced reading test required for all eighth grade students or an alternative reading proficiency test approved by the State Department of Education.

In Florida, no VOE form is necessary, but you are required to be in compliance with attendance requirements, meaning that if you accumulate 15 or more unexcused absences within a 90-day period, your school will report you to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). If your school reports you, you must obtain written verification of 30 consecutive days of attendance with no unexcused absences from your school in order to apply for a driver’s license.

Iowa, Indiana and Ohio are among the states that do not require a VOE to get your driver’s license.

What do I have to do to be eligible for a VOE?

The eligibility requirements for a VOE differ from state to state.

In Texas, you must be currently enrolled in school and have been awarded credit for each class you took the semester prior to applying for your VOE.

In Georgia, you must only be currently enrolled in the school to get your Certificate of School Enrollment.

In Nevada, you must be in compliance with your school district’s minimum attendance policy in order to qualify for your Certification of Attendance.

How long is a VOE good for?

Again, the timeline for how long a VOE is good for varies from state to state.

In Texas, your VOE is valid for 30 days from the date it was issued. However, if your VOE was issued in the last 5 days of the school year, it will not expire until the first day of the following school year.

In Georgia, your Certificate of School Enrollment is valid for 30 days from the date it was signed and dated.

In Nevada, your Certification of Attendance is good for 60 days from the date it is signed and dated.

What information goes on a VOE?

A VOE normally contains the name of the student, the name and address of the school, and a signature from a school official, along with a date.

If I’m 18, do I need a VOE?

No, you do not need a VOE if you’re age 18 or older.

Where should I get my VOE if I’m moving to a different school?

If you’re moving to a different school, where you get your VOE from will depend on the eligibility requirements for VOE forms in your state. In Texas, for example, where you’re required to have been awarded credit for each class you took the previous semester, you may want to try and get your VOE from your current school before you move. However, if you’re in a state like Georgia that just requires you to be currently enrolled, you can get it from whichever school you’re enrolled in at the time that you apply for your permit or license.

How do I get a VOE if I’m homeschooled?

If you’re homeschooled, your parent or guardian will need to fill out the VOE for you.
