How to Celebrate World Senior Citizen Day

Friday, August 21st is World Senior Citizen Day! This year, the celebrations may look a little different with many older adults practicing social distancing. That doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate! Here are three ways to celebrate World Senior Citizen Day without breaking social distancing guidelines.

1. Send a card.

The pandemic has been hard on everyone, but especially those more at risk of getting sick, like senior citizens. There have been many stories about families unable to visit with their loved ones in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and senior centers, for example. A card can brighten someone’s day immensely. You can get in contact with your local nursing home to see if they are accepting cards for residents. There are also organizations where you can send a card or letter showing your care and support for senior citizens, such as Love for the Elderly.

2. Offer to grocery shop for a neighbor.

If you know a senior citizen in your neighborhood and you’re able to, offer to do some of their grocery shopping! If you don’t have your neighbor’s phone number, you can leave a friendly note on their door with your contact information, offering your help if they need it. It’s a small gesture that could really help out someone in your community!

3. Sign up for a virtual course together.

If you have a parent or grandparent who is far away, or who is self-isolating, use the internet to your advantage! There are lots of activities you can do together online. Just talking on the phone or video-chatting can feel burdensome when there’s no new information to report. Including an activity can help give you something to feel closer even while you’re apart. There are online painting classes, for example, or a cooking class you could do together. Get creative and have fun!

Another fun idea would be to take an online driving course at the same time as your loved one! Now is a great time to take one of our Auto Insurance Discount or Mature Driver Improvement courses. Who doesn’t love an insurance discount? You and your loved one could each take a course, and compare notes afterwards! We also offer defensive driving courses that could be fun to take at the same time as your loved ones. It’s always a good time to refresh your driving skills! With it being harder to be together at this time, a shared activity can be a real mood booster! We hope you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy, and we are here to help with all of your driver safety needs!
